Modified Larger Extended Version:
ONE OF THE BEST PLATE TECTONICS LABS YOU WILL EVER FIND! A MUST HAVE!
Acclaimed by university science education professors.
It’s the EDIBLE orange lab! This pairs great with the other plate tectonic labs/activities provided on my TPT page including the edible graham cracker lab.
Loaded with COLOR and so fun to teach! You may use the images provided, your own materials, or BOTH.
Materials can be changed based on personal and pedagogical preference and availability. Model the Earth with an orange and its lithospheric plates with its peels. Model the asthenosphere with frosting, icing, or peanut butter. Model the inner core, outer core, and lower mantle with the edible portion of the orange.
This dynamic and strategically varied pedagogical lab incorporates a HANDS-ON inquiry based approach with infused direct instruction and varied approach to depth of knowledge assessment.
Core terminology and concepts covered in this lab/tutorial include:
-Lithosphere (tectonic plates)
-Inner core and outer core
-Convergent boundaries (collision, ocean-ocean subduction, ocean-continental subduction)
-Transform (sliding) boundaries
-Weathering and erosion
-Nature of science (scientific method)
-Modeling and manipulation
-Correlation of lab procedure, lab results, and definitions/concepts
This works well for any level but is GREAT for special education students or college prep learners that need an alternative assessment and may not be great at traditional labs.
Also, perfect for homeschooling!
WIDE RANGE OF ABILITY LEVELS! The application to a diverse body of learners, whether it be age or ability level, is predicated on the fact that the instructor determines the difficulty level of the whole activity or part of the activity based on what information is given and what information is not as well as how verbal questions are presented to the student(s).
This is a thorough and DYNAMIC activity that covers a ton of information about plate tectonics. This has been used as a pre-class, lab/activity, study guide, review, and assessment. This is an effective teaching tool one on one, in small groups, and as a class when using a Smart Board/Promethean Board/Projection.
A guaranteed hit all around!
A great addition to your geology teaching library.
Within the classroom, this activity has been consistently very successful and acclaimed by students in grades 3rd – 9th within multiple types of schools - public, private, and charter.
This work has also been shared at workshops, in-services, and conferences.
Great feedback from parents, teachers, administrators, and curriculum field professionals.
Applicable to many state science assessments and benchmarks.
Has been applied to state mandated North Carolina end of year tests for science in grades 5 and 8.
Even used by teachers in New York State as a preparation for the Earth Science Grade 9 Regents Exam.
