Play-doh is a fun way for young learners to form CVC words while building fine motor skills. This unit contains short a CVC words for your students to form using play-doh. Students will roll play-doh “snakes” and bend them to form the letters of CVC words.
There are 3 mat versions, making differentiation easy!
1. Form the letters of the CVC word using the dough letter models. Mat has a cute picture of the word so students can sound it out using the picture to help.
2. Form the letters of the CVC word using the dough letter models, and match the picture to the word on the mat. Students form the letters of the word, but then need to decode and find the matching picture to lay on their mat.
3. Form the letters of the CVC word in the letter boxes (no dough models!) On one version, the CVC word is written on the page, so the student has a guide on correct letter formation On the other version, the CVC word is not written on the page…the student must sound out the word and form the letters.
There are also two optional recording sheets for center accountability.
Words on the mats are:
Cat, bat, hat, mat, rat, pat, sat
Cab, dab, gab, lab, tab
Bad, dad, mad, lad, pad, sad
Bag, rag, tag, wag
Ham, ram, jam, yam
Can, ban, man, fan, ran, van
Cap, gap, lap, map, nap, tap
Great for centers or small group work!
