This unit is designed to engage student's prior experiences with motion, forces, and interactions on the playground. Students will learn what a force is by recording everything they can safely do to someone on a swing to make them move, eventually learning that no matter what they did it falls into the category of a push or a pull. At the end of activity one students should be able define a force as a push or a pull that changes the motion of an object. Students will then use model swings (tire swings) in the classroom to plan and investigate the effects of different strengths and directions of pushes and pulls on their swings. Students will use a graphic organizer to ask a question, plan a way to investigate the question, and record the results. By the end of the second activity students should be able to explain that greater forces have greater effects when objects are interacting. A bigger pull or push generates a higher swing, applying a force from one side while it is in motion will cause it to change directions, applying a force with your hand can cause it to stop. Students will then come up with an idea to make the swing go higher or faster by modifying its design and gather data to determine if their idea worked. Lastly they will apply the same ideas to modify a "slide" in order to make objects traveling down it go faster.
