This is a set of files that includes a powerpoint, and 4 word files. The painting project asks students to create a large contemporary facecard design. They are to consider the elements of design as well as traditional and contemporary approaches to playing cards that have been around since medieval times.
Included in these files are:
- An 16 page powerpoint project that outlines the basic history of playing cards, gives image examples, and outlines the assignment, assignment goals, and marking criteria.
-a description of the painting project with goals and grading criteria
-a reflection for students to complete at the end of the project for some self assessing
-a set of questions for students to fill out when reviewing the powerpoint
-playing card painting evaluation sheet
-Worksheet for students to do online research on cards from around the world
I have done this project with grade 10s and grade 11s. It could be appropriate for Junior High school as well. Depending on the size of the final artwork it could take anywhere from 5-8 classes to complete, or more.
An adapatation I did with this assignment one year was to complete it as a self portrait playing card, which is a nice way for students to connect to it a little more.
