I use this Rubric to grade French Folk Song from the Essential Elements books. It could easily be adapted to any playing quiz in the beginning strings/orchestra classroom, and clearly states the criteria for earning each point, as well as a bow hold check list. I circle the description of what the student has done in each category, check off what I see in the student's bow hold, then add up final score at the bottom. I run off a copy for each student, grade on it as he or she is playing, then send it home as a clear progress report on how the student is doing in class.
Categories in this rubric are: Notes, Bow Zone, Posture, Stead Beat, Intonation, Tone Quality, Sustaining Notes/Rhythm Accuracy
Tally marks may be put under category headers to keep track of inaccurate notes or any other notes you wish to keep.
