With the increasing demand on teachers to increase the vocabulary of our students, I have created a worksheet that requires students to find a vocabulary word in their reading and write down the sentence or sentences that give them clues about the meaning of the word. Next, they must come up with an "I Think" as to what the definition of this word could be based on the clues. Finally, they must pull out the specific context clues they based their "I Think" on and write them down. I usually only give students 5-10 words at a time based on the grade level. Once students have worked independently for 20-30 minutes, I have them share their "I Thinks" whole group and then we come up with the actual definition together as a class. I have seen a dramatic increase on the quality of "I Thinks" my students come up with when they are forced to justify their definition with context clues.
