This is a generic summary format that can be used to help students write a summary of a short story, picture book, or other literary text. I have had great results using it with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders, though it would certainly be useful for IEP or RTI students at higher grade levels, to either scaffold their work, or to help develop their ability to summarize a story. I particularly like using this form in my literacy centers as a way to gather formative assessment on how well my students are comprehending their independent reading or listening selections. Routine practice with summarizing has really helped them master the RL5 & 7 common core standards!
At the top of the page I explain how the plot is what carries the reader through the story, as they want to know how a problem is solved. I have outlined for the student how to organize the beginning, middle, and end of the action around the problem in the story. This has helped my students focus on the real and important events of the story, instead of chasing rabbits and getting mired in details.
