This plot diagram, or plot map, can be used with any short story. It provides students an opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of the basic and advanced levels of literary analysis.
It features exposition (Characters, setting -both time and place, and conflict), initiating incident, rising action, climax, resolution (aka falling action, & denouement), as well as theme. It also features a chance to explore an additional literary element of your choice from the text! ( Choose motif, symbolism, characterization, foreshadowing, etc.)
I've used it successfully with both 8th and 9th grade students.
Great for citing text, and working with literary elements of plot, theme, etc. Especially fun to teach initiating incident with!
