Description

These four print-and-go trifolds target the skill of analyzing the plot progression in a book, story, or reading passage. Use these plot elements trifolds over the course of 4 days to provide targeted instruction on this topic.

As I was creating these trifolds, I pictured myself using them with small groups of students. Specifically, I envisioned sitting around a table with a group of students who could benefit from targeted instruction focused on recognizing the plot development present in a story, and who need additional opportunities to practice identifying various plot elements after reading. That being said, however, you can also successfully use these trifolds in a large group setting or assign them as independent work.

These plot elements trifolds progress from basic to more complex. Answer keys are included, along with additional teacher notes for EACH trifold. CHECK OUT THE PREVIEW to get a good feel for what you will get if you choose to purchase this resource.

Trifold #1: The main purpose of Book #1 is to teach students the names of each plot element, and to introduce them to the purpose of each plot element. After students name, define, and label the 5 main parts of a plot diagram, they read statements about the story "The Three Little Pigs", and name the area where each statement belongs on the plot diagram.

Trifold #2: In this tri-fold, students take a closer look at the "rising action" and "climax" sections of the plot diagram. After reading the author's notes on these two elements, students identify the rising action events and climax of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears". On Panel C, students are given two original story summaries, and they must highlight the climax within the summary. On Panel D, students fill out a plot diagram for the classic fairy tale "Cinderella".

Trifold #3: Book #3 is designed to give students an opportunity to apply what they've learned in the first two trifolds. First, students read the original short story written inside the trifold. Then, they turn to the back of the tri-fold and complete the plot diagram to show their understanding of the story's plot development.

Trifold #4: The primary purpose for this final trifold is to expose students to assessment questions related to identifying the story’s plot. First, students read the story on Panel A, and then match each label to the appropriate summary statement. Then, students read the story on Panel C, and answer the multiple-choice question (related to the story's climax) at the bottom of Panel C.
