These are our notes on the elements of plot structure, used for our interactive notebook. For visual learners, the mountain symbol helps students see the dramatic progression of a story. We also talk about how our writing of stories should involve this kind of progression of conflict and character development to make our stories interesting!
We go through notes with the foldable, and then I usually have students complete the mountain on their own the next day to see the information an additional time in a slightly different way. Students often use the foldable to help them, but because the information is hidden behind the flap, students can test themselves without seeing the information in front of them. However, students who need that extra support will have all the notes right there to help them through the mountain.
The plot mountain includes some Key Vocabulary to help students with spelling as well as some clues as to some of the words they will use to complete the page.
After these notes, and notes on imagery (see my other products), students complete a writing journal (included!) where they must use the plot structure. Students are encouraged to begin their story with a full paragraph of imagery describing ONLY the setting.
