This is a fun assignment where students will pretend that are plotting to conquer the world. Students will look at maps of the world that identify each country's most valuable export. Students will pick one country to take over per category. For example, precious metals, oil and technology. Students will then have to assess how the country's politics, economy and culture would clash with or benefit their imaginary country. There are also follow up questions included.
When I used this lesson with my class, my students were very excited to take over countries. I put students in groups to complete this and once everyone was done I pulled the world map up on the projector and each group shared which countries they chose and why. I used it as an introduction in my foreign policy class and US History II class to the concept of imperialism.
The link to the major exports map is included on this sheet.
