One of my ESL students once said that plural noun spelling rules were "crazy", but this activity helped her see the logic behind the rules.
Allowing students to discover spelling rules by working together in cooperative learning groups decreases teacher talk and instills deductive reasoning skills. When they can articulate rules in their own words, they own them and will be more likely to both remember them and use them correctly.
In this linguistic investigation, students will work together to discover the spelling rules for regular plural nouns. Then they will summarize their findings on a rules summary worksheet.
This activity was designed for mid-beginning and higher-level adult/high school ESL students.
