These 40 short stories were designed to help students build fluency and become more confident readers, in an engaging, hands-on way. Each story is made up of words with long vowels (silent e) and grade level sight words and vocabulary.

The stories all come with a matching picture. Students read the stories and choose the picture that goes with it. The story cards have a blank space at the end, for students to place the picture.

The stories are fun to read and students will enjoy finding the matching pictures. You can choose to put out stories that focus on just one long vowel, or stories that focus on a mix of several long vowels. You can put out a few stories to match, or all of them at the same time, for a more challenging activity.

There is an optional recording sheet included, where students can write one of the stories and illustrate it. This is GREAT handwriting practice! Students can use the matching pictures to help them draw their own pictures.

To prepare, just print, laminate, and cut out the story cards and pictures. Put them at a station, along with a pocket chart. Cards can also be matched on a table or the floor.

These stories were designed to accompany my Reading Comprehension Stories {Silent e Edition.} They contain the same stories and matching pictures. Students read the stories, highlight the long vowel words, answer three comprehension questions, and practice writing three long vowel words from the page.

You can complete the reading comprehension sheets during your small group time, and students can use the matching activity during station time, to give them even more opportunity to build fluency and confidence in reading and writing sentences.
