I am constantly looking for ways in which to sharpen my students' listening skills. With the Common Core curriculum and all of the standardized testing that is required of them, this is a particularly important skill to develop and hone, yet also much more challenging in a world in which we, as teachers, are competing with stimulation that is hitting our students from every direction.
This podcast can be heard over the course of two typical class periods. The podcast is divided into two parts, each part timed at roughly 30 minutes. Exit and Return is a podcast about Shulem Deen, an ex-Hassidic Jew from the New Square community in New York. After a short lifetime of following the rules and edicts of the community, Shulem purchases a computer, slips in an AOL floppy disc (it's 1998, after all), and discovers the internet. This discovery leads Shulem down a twisted rabbit hole to the world outside the community...a community to which he now can never return.
