A monthly September-June curriculum with a different poem, classical music piece, and artist to study each month. Thought was given to diversity in the artists and poets, both in style and cultural background. I have successfully used this program for 4 years at various grade levels. The poems are chosen to be memorized, with students having the whole month to work towards it. This would work for 2nd-5th grade, ideally, but can also reach middle-schoolers. You could add in a literacy piece by searching for picture books on each artist (which are available for almost, if not all, of the artists selected.) Additionally, you could expand it further by creating a work of art month in the style of the artist. I start each morning by playing the music-of-the-month. I strove to include artists, musical pieces, and poems the students will encounter throughout their lives.
The can be used as a teacher guide or printed as a booklet for student/parent use. There is also an excerpt on the defense of memorization included.
