Poem in Your Pocket Day began in April 2002 as an initiative by the Office of the Mayor in New York City, in partnership with the city's Departments of Cultural Affairs and Education. In 2008, the Academy of American Poets expanded the idea to all fifty states. Poem in Your Pocket Day encourages individuals around the country to participate by celebrating poetry.

Poem in Your Pocket Day takes place every year on a day in April, which is National Poetry Month.  It will take place on April 29th, 2021 this year.

I created this activity for kindergarten students to celebrate poetry and practice reading fluency at the same time. This resource includes pocket templates as well as 30 short vowel sounds mini-poems. We do a page of poems per day. At the end of the week, students have a pocket full of poems to practice reading at home.

This resource is great for kindergarten literacy centers, partner reading, and more!

Throughout the week, I also read my students poems by famous authors. They love listening to poetry and having poems of their own that they can read!
