Students highlight words that define their identity and then create an acrostic poem with them using their first or last name. They then draw and color each of the items listed.
This lesson is designed for heritage speakers class.
This lesson is suitable for students in grades 6-12. Linguistically speaking it is not very challenging, but it requires students to reflect on the way they identify themselves. You can differentiate for more advanced students by requiring them to write sentences instead of just words (example provided of this option in the download).
This took my students one class period (57 minutes). Some students took it home for homework because they put a lot of effort into their drawings.
My students really enjoyed this! The rubric design is simple and it was easy for me to grade.
Three pages for the student handout, one teacher instruction page, and eight student examples provided.
