This notebook file includes five slides. It defines assonance, consonance, repetition, and alliteration, and gives clear examples for each from literature, poetry and even rap lyrics (these examples are invaluable for explaining these terms clearly).
It also includes a slide with the text of the poem "Homage to my Hips" by Lucille Clifton. This poem includes all of the devices included in the slides. First we listen to Ms. Clifton perform the poem aloud on www.poets.org. We then go through the poem identifying alliteration, assonance, consonance and repetition. Finally we listen to the poem once more - a second hearing often reveals devices that we missed before.
