During our Poetry Unit, students are assigned a common unit called the Song Project. In this project, students choose a (school-appropriate) song to analyze. In their analysis, they must create a two-fold presentation: 1. They must analyze poetic devices in the song, and 2. they must analyze the meaning of the song. These are delivered in both writing and in a class presentation, where the students may play a clip of the song either in audio or in YouTube. The students really enjoy the project.
This rubric defines the expectations of the project. After having assigned it for a few years, I've also added check-off boxes to keep track of the devices and make the correcting faster. The rubric is based on a 4-Point scale, with the following categories: Intro, Thesis, Topic Sentences, Definitions of Poetic Devices, Number of Poetic Devices, Song's Meaning and Conclusion.
