This chart was created for students to track author's use of Poetic Devices while reading novels. They are asked to find and record examples of similes, metaphors, onomatopoeia, and personification AND to comment on the significance. This exercise encourages students to read closely and to increase awareness that poetry is a part of everything they read. As well, by evaluating the significance of the usage, students are developing inference-making and critical thinking skills.
Download includes at PDF version as well as a MS Word version so that you can add in a specific novel title if preferred.
Extension: Have students choose one of the examples of poetic devices to draw or illustrate. Then, post these in the classroom!
