So, what exactly constitutes a Poetry Element Mini? Each week students focus on a few terms or poetry elements. Every day that week, Monday through Thursday, students complete (with strong teacher direction) short 10-15 minute mini-lessons that focus on those terms/elements. The lesson on Thursday uses a song for its text. I haven’t selected a particular song for these lessons. Instead, I offer a group of questions along with a list of possible songs. On Friday, a grade is taken in the form of a short quiz. This quiz alternates between two different formats. Some quizzes are in the form of matching terms to definitions. Other quizzes are composed of a passages with multiple choice questions. Activities and quizzes are cumulative. Minilessons lend themselves well to Bell Ringer Activities to start off the class or for ending class. There are seven total poetry lessons addressed in this packet: types of poetry, simile/metaphor/personification, oxymoron/hyperbole/imagery, sound devices, rhyme, symbol/tone/theme, and poetic forms.
