April is National Poetry Month, but any month is a great time to start a poetry study with children! Students love to explore poetry! Poems can be a wonderful creative outlet, and be very satisfying and validating to a young author.
Adding a Poetry unit into a Language Arts curriculum helps students better understand alliteration and rhythm, allows them to break apart the syllabication of words and develop their reading and writing skills, and lets them get their creative juices flowing! It’s also a great way to expose children to the works of great writers of the past, such as Shakespeare and his contemporaries.
Poetry can be serious and introspective as well as silly and nonsensical. In this 4-week introduction to poetry, students are introduced to 20 different common poetry forms. In these two student activity books, students are introduced to each poetry style, and presented with the guidelines for the style.
An example of each type of poetry is given to help children better understand, and they are given the opportunity to explore the poetry style independently, as ‘try a couple out!’ pages are included for each poetry style.
Over the course of this poetry unit, students are introduced to 20 styles of poetry:
* Free Verse
* Bio Poems
* Personification Poems
* Color Poetry
* Ode Poetry
* 5 W’s Poetry
* Onomatopoeia Poetry
* Exaggeration Poems
* Nonet Poems
Also included in this revised version of this file is a full color version of the student activity books as well as additional gray-scale versions to help facilitate black and white printing.
