Poetry Activities with 20 Ready-to-Use Graphic Organizers - Kindergarten - Grade 2
Poetry Activities with Graphic Organizers includes 20 reading activities with at least one ready-to-use graphic organizer per activity that can be used to study a variety of poems for students in Kindergarten through grade 2.
- These activities and graphic organizers can be:
- used by teachers to introduce and model elements of poetry.
- used by students for guided and independent practice with elements of poetry.
- used with the same poem or with different poems.
Each activity is divided into Before Reading, During Reading, and After Reading components. A poem is selected to be read and studied. The Before Reading component is directed by the teacher before the poem is read. The During Reading component is done during the reading of the poem. The After Reading component is conducted after the poem is read. The poems can be read out loud by the teacher, individual students, or pairs of students. Poems can be selected by the teacher or students.
Some of these activities and graphic organizers may be a bit difficult for students in kindergarten or early first grade to complete on their own. You may want to do these activities with students from an older classroom. It works well with fourth and fifth graders. Maybe you could get together with a teacher from a fourth or fifth grade classroom and pair your students with his or her students. The older students, or "Reading Buddies", could read poems to their partner and help the younger students complete the graphic organizers. Have the older buddies read the poems aloud. The older buddies can write or help the younger students write to complete the graphic organizers.
The activities can be selected to fit with certain kinds of poems. For example, many poems include rhyming words. Some of the activities with graphic organizers in this product focus on rhyming words. Another example, some poems are a bit like stories because they tell a story with a beginning, middle, and ending; a problem with solution; setting; and characters. Some of these activities with graphic organizers focus on these elements.
Several poems can be selected and used by the teacher to model how an activity can be completed with its graphic organizer. Then the teacher can select another one or two poems to use as guided practice for the activity and graphic organizer. Finally, one or two poems can be picked by the teacher or students to use as independent practice. Once modeled and practiced, the graphic organizers can be used as class work, homework, or in literacy centers for students to complete on their own with poems picked themselves or by the teacher.
The teacher can make overhead transparencies of the poems and graphic organizers to help model the activities and guide instruction. Transparencies can be made for Before Reading, During Reading, and After Reading activities.
These activities can be used as stand alone lessons or combined with a unit of study about the elements of poetry.
Read many poems and enjoy these great poetry activities with graphic organizers!
