This Poetry Unit challenges students to reflect upon themselves in unique ways. These four poetry writing activities guide the students to write a biography (personal poetry) in free verse form. It is an excellent medium for students to express their inner self in a variety of ways. This unit of free verse poems is designed with the middle years in mind (from grades 4-11). The students will be asked to extend their thinking beyond a simple reflection. The students are challenged to express themselves using advanced stylistic tools (sophisticated vocabulary, complex phrasing and figurative language). Each project takes the student through the writing process: prewriting, drafting, editing, proofreading and publishing.
There are four separate poetry projects designed to take three or four days each to complete (depending on prewriting strategies and extensions). The poems are:
a. Poetry Project #1: Selfie
b. Poetry Project #2: The Real Deal
c. Poetry Project #3: Biogra-Me
d. Poetry Project #4: Inside Tweets
This unit contains detailed instructions, student examples, graphic organizers and a rubric for assessment.
No teacher preparation is required.
