Poetry is an important genre, and our students need to know how to read it. Poetry offers students the opportunity to comprehend, to connect, to question, to infer, to interpret, to summarize, and to synthesize.
In the testing world, analyzing poetry is all about deciphering the author’s craft. We can no longer think of poetry as its own “unit” that we cover once at the beginning of the year. Instead, we need to embrace poetry and connect it to each of the other genres we teach throughout the year.
