Product Description
Poetry Analysis / Análisis de Poesía

Begin the day with a poem or incorporate a poem as an additional resource to help students augment their vocabulary, literacy and fluency skills in either English or Spanish. Students can draw pictures of their favorite scenes and teachers can guide students through the vocabulary and comprehension/critical thinking questions in response to the theme of a poem.

As an avenue to help students improve speaking and writing fluency skills, students read a wide variety of materials including poems, short stories, magazine and newspaper articles and model essays. The information on this file will help students practice reading and interpreting poetry as well as to organize, support and express their ideas, conclusions and opinions in either English or in Spanish.

In addition to whole class structures the questioning strategies and guides can be used by students as each contemplates his or her own personal experiences as related to the theme of a poem or short story.

Students can study poetic terms and analyze general themes a few at a time. The sample terms, questions, themes will help students to organize information and to facilitate students’ efforts to read, interpret, analyze, discuss and anticipate the analytical process with poetry and literature in general.

Included on this file are the following:

1. Poems Authored by Julie Jacobson
-Para Los Aztecas / For the Aztecs (A poem in Spanish translated to English)
-Memories of Springtime

2. Guided Questions
2 sections of questions in English and Spanish that a teacher can use to guide students through the analysis of a poem from the first step of associating a personal
experience to the poem through questioning students about the connotation and theme of the poem.

3. A list of general themes in both English and Spanish

4. Conduct a Poetry Contest with Award Banner tags in English or Spanish (Certificado de Excelencia) that can be modified if preferred and placed on top of clip art.
