This is a guided analysis of the poem "I am in need of music" by Elizabeth Bishop.
It would be best if you have already taught or reviewed figurative language (including simile, metaphor, alliteration, and personification). If you are just introducing these, this is a great poem to practice on!
My students enjoyed having the questions and annotation prompts right next to the poem. They really enjoyed diving deep into the use of figurative language and imagery. By the end of class, they discussed really enjoying the poem and how calming it was to read and analyze. We did Exit Tickets where the kids wrote their final thoughts/impressions on Post-It notes and stuck them to the wall. Most wrote that they enjoyed the imagery, felt relaxed by the reading, or wanted to go listen to music!
