Students studying American Literature or transcendentalism often read Ralph Waldo Emerson's essay, "Self Reliance." This is an INTENSE text and often a short break helps.
Emerson wrote a poem by the same title, which is often overlooked. It has many of the same ideas. This worksheet allows students to analyze the big ideas, practice paraphrasing, and finding textual support.
Finally students get to find a song they feel has the same ideas transcendentalists would support. Students enjoy the last activity.
