This is four pages of sketch notes for students to color as they learn about poetry and how to analyze it. There is nothing for students to fill in, which makes this set of notes ideal for including absent students. There is a high-interest poem at the end (The Rose that Grew from Concrete by Tupac Shakur) to give students guided practice at applying their analysis skills.
I use this with my students at the beginning of our poetry unit to discuss how we read and analyze poetry. You could have students read and color the notes as homework before an in-class discussion, or you could read through the notes with students (though I would recommend breaking them up into at least two different lessons so students don't lose interest). Students should keep these notes throughout the unit to refer back to.
