Analyze the short poem DREAMS by Langston Hughes for theme, tone, figurative language and meaning! Students also practice using text features, like footnotes, to understand information in the text.
With this short lesson, students will be utilizing close reading strategies, note taking on a Google Doc, and finding supporting text evidence. Students should be able to use (or will need instruction on using) the highlight tool in Google Docs and underlining.
Assessment: have students write a theme statement based on the poem. Included is space for a theme statement or teachers can have students write a whole paragraph. Finally, students go back into the text and highlight sections of the poem to support their answer.
**This is a Google Doc file but teachers can easily print and distribute to students with pens and highlighters.
