In part 1 of this three part poetry unit, students complete an independent inquiry into some of the various elements of poetry. Elements in this assignment include:
Upon researching what each element means/is, students then complete visual journal pages about each element, complete with examples of their element from poetry books.
My students are given 8-10 hours of classtime to complete their research and visual journal pages. There are two more parts to this project as well.
This is part 2 of a three part assignment. Students will learn how to write 7 different types of poems.
I give them a mini lesson (not included) about what each type of poem involves. They then write a poem of their own, in that form. Their poem is written into their visual journal and illustrated appropriately.
We do one poem a day, and the kids get a couple extra classes at the end to finish things off. There is a third part to this assignment as well.
This is the last part in this three part project. Students will learn about and explore the element of alliteration. After seeing examples, they will create a unique superhero with an accompanying sentence of alliteration to go with it.
My students also do this assignment in their visual journal, bringing their poetry anthology to a total of 12 pages. They are given 3-4 hours to complete this assignment.
