This is a fun activity which has students inquire and discover for themselves key poetry terms, as they use dictionaries, literary term books, and/or their cellular telephones. I use this activity at the start of the poetry unit so that all students familiarize themselves with essential vocabulary in order to discuss, analyze, and write about poetry. I have used this with students in Grades 9 and 10, to much success. Honestly, I have been surprised how willingly the students buy into the “friendly competition” element of this lesson, with or without little "treats" to encourage them even more.
