Use these bell ringer prompts to give students practice reading and analyzing poems quickly. Each handout requires students to provide theme topics, theme statements, and text support for their responses. There are five poems by classic British authors and bell ringers in total (these could last one week or five weeks depending on how you use them). If desired, students can choose their own poems to analyze and use the blank template.
Poems included follow:
Ozymandias by Percey Bysshe Shelley
The Man He Killed by Thomas Hardy
I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud by William Wordsworth
Invictus by William Earnest Henley
Sonnet 18 by William Shakespeare
Instructions for using the bell ringers and sample keys for each poem are provided in the resource. Furthermore, several suggestions are provided for using these handouts as other activities.
