Use these bell ringer prompts (theme topic, theme statement & text support) to get students reading and analyzing poems quickly. Each handout requires students to provide theme topics, theme statements, and text support for their responses. There are five poems by classic American authors and bell ringers in total (these could last one week or five weeks depending on how you use them). If desired, students can use the blank template and choose their own poems to analyze.
Poems included follow:
The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Theme for English B by Langston Hughes
Richard Cory by Edward Arlington Robinson
Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost
Annabel Lee by Edgar Allan Poe
Instructions for using the bell ringers and sample keys for each poem are provided in the resource. Furthermore, several suggestions are provided for using these handouts as other activities.
