Use these poetry analysis prompts to give students practice reading and interpreting poems quickly. Each handout requires students to provide theme topics, theme statements, and text support for their responses. There are five classic poems and bell-ringers in total (these could last one week or five weeks depending on how you use them). If desired, students can use the blank template and choose their own poems to analyze.

Poems included follow:

"Snow" by Walter de la Mare

"Snowflakes" by Fannie Isabel Sherrick

"The Old Year" by John Clare

"The Snow-Storm" by Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Holidays" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Instructions for using the bell-ringers and sample keys for each poem are provided in the resource. Furthermore, these prompts could be used for learning stations and group work. In fact, they're perfect for differentiation.
