SUGGESTIONS FOR HOW TO USE THIS PRODUCT:
This is a 3-4 week poetry unit that allows students to explore poetry and create their own poetry. The project can be easily modified to shorten or lengthen the unit, and is suitable for students in grades 3-6. Throughout the unit, students are introduced to a variety of poems, including bio peoms, couplets, diamantes, quatrains, cinquians, haikus, limericks, acrostics, concrete poems, and free verse. Students have the opportunity to write their own poetry that follows the rules and guidelines for each specific type of poem. Students also have the opportunity to explore poetry written by others and find poems that are meaningful to them. This unit includes day-by-day teacher directions for the unit, a PowerPoint presentation with guidelines for each type of poem, as well as examples of each type of poem, student directions for the project, a rubric for how to grade the final product, and a poetry quiz. The final product is a poetry book created by each student that includes original poetry written by them, as well as poems by other authors. Students also have an opportunity to express what they’ve learned about poetry throughout the unit, as well as to share their work with others.
