Purpose: To increase fluency. Poetry cafe is wonderful for students of all reading levels, but is most effective for ELL students, or struggling readers.
Each student will need a folder with brads in the middle. They will keep each of their poems in this folder, so that at the end of the year, they will have a Poetry Cafe folder, filled with poems. This folder will go back and forth between home and school.
Every Monday, I pass out a new poem to my students. I choose poems from our Reading series, or various websites that have printable poem options.
We spend the week reading through the poem, to get ready for “Poetry Cafe” on Friday. Students also take the poem home each night to practice reading it. By Friday, they should have 4 signatures from a family member, or friend, who has listened to them read the poem aloud.
Our reading schedule is as follows:
Cold read: students read the poem and circle any words they don’t know
Teacher reads aloud poem, discusses any patterns or unknown words
Choral read poem as a class.
Discuss proper fluency techniques.
Partner read (students read the poem aloud to 3 different friends in the class).
Group read aloud. All students read the poem aloud, over and over, while the timer is on for one minute. (Students will be reading at different speeds)
Poetry Cafe: Each student takes a turn standing up in front of the class to read the poem. While they are reading, they will be graded using the attached rubric.
*This pack includes a 2-page description of the activity, a rubric with which to grade the students as they read, and a teacher recording sheet.
