This standards-based product contains a 4 step close reading lesson plan for the Edna St. Vincent Millay poem "Conscientious Objector."
Step One: Cold Read. Students read the poem with no instructions and determine the "gist."
Step Two: Close Read. Students read and annotate the poem with instructions to look for figurative language and details related to theme. Students use a Cornell notes template to record their impressions and questions.
Step Three: Critical Read. Students read the poem with attention to bolded details and answer text dependent questions in a Cornell notes template.
Step Four: Culminating Task. Students review and revise their thinking about the poem and respond to a prompt that asks them to define the poem's themes and analyze how the author uses figurative language to contribute to this theme.
