Teach close reading and literary analysis writing by using these Poetry Paired Passages. Poems are paired with universal themes and help your students meet the expectations of Common Core Standards.
Each lesson guides students through close readings of poems for varied reading levels. For your highest readers, use “To My Dear and Loving Husband” by Anne Bradstreet & “My Last Duchess” by Robert Browning. The paired poems, “We Wear the Mask” by Paul Laurence Dunbar and “I’m Nobody! Who are you?” by Emily Dickinson, are most appropriate for your middle level readers. Finally, your struggling readers will benefit from their reading of the poems, “First Lesson” by Philip Booth and “Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hayden.
Each lesson culminates in a writing task that imitates the style of the PARCC literary analysis essay. Additionally, these lessons incorporate all strands of the Common Core English Language Arts (ELA) Standards.
The Paired Passage resources include the following: lesson plans with identified Common Core ELA Anchor Standards, anticipation guides, contextual reading guides with sample annotation passages, public domain poem texts or online links to poems, literature web and poetry graphic organizers, Venn diagrams, literary analysis prompts, short literary analysis essay rubrics, and answer keys. Detailed responses for all activities and sample essays are provided in the keys, making these valuable emergency substitute lessons.
This bundle includes 52 pages. If preferred, each paired passage is available separately too! Here is a link to other lessons:
