Help students fall in love with poetry by letting them choose which poems they want to read on the first day of your poetry unit.
In this activity, students view an online collection of poetry and choose their favorite lines, combining them with art to create poetry collages. My students have really enjoyed this creative activity year after year, and the final product makes for a lovely display to keep up throughout your poetry unit.
Examples: These are three poetry collages my students created.
Guiding Handout: On the day you want to do the poetry collage, bring photocopies of the guiding handout and book a computer lab or plan to use whatever devices you have available in your classroom.
Analysis & Reflection Handout: On the day the collages are due, bring photocopies of this handout. Ask students to put their collages on their desks, then stand up and walk around the room, viewing other collages and filling out the analysis handout as they go.
I just created this product after hearing a lot of teachers talk about their wish to do more poetry OUTSIDE the textbook. I'd love for you to be one of the first reviewers! And remember, when you leave a review, you get credit on your future TPT purchases. Awesome for everyone.
