Students studying and writing poetry can create a gift book of poems especially selected for persons of their choosing. In this creative project that makes a terrific culminating activity for poetry or creative writing unit, students are encouraged to both research new poems and write some of their own. Students can choose to create a poetry collection for a special family member, a coach, another teacher, a friend, or anyone they would like to honor with an inexpensive and artistic gift. For example, one of my sophomore students wanted to honor his accordion instructor who was a university professor in Michigan. He asked me if there were poems written about the accordion! I honestly replied that I had no clue, but as we began looking, we found several existing ones to compliment the couple he had composed himself. His teacher was thrilled to have received such a collection of poems, and kept it prominently displayed in her office at the university. She unfortunately died tragically the next year, and his personal gift of poetry regarding her favorite musical instrument became part of her memorial service.
