This is a complete poetry unit (10-15 days) that includes well known poems, study questions, a test, a summative assignment with marking rubrics (writing a poem and/or analyzing a poem), and ANSWERS. I use it in grade 9, but it could be used in 10-11. Also have a look at Poetry Units B, C, and D. The units build on each other, but they also stand alone.
The unit includes the poems "Ballad of Birmingham" by Dudley Randall, "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost, "Richard Cory” by Edwin Arlington Robinson, “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” by Robert Frost, "Jabberwocky" by Lewis Carroll, "Nothing Gold Can Stay" by Robert Frost, “To the Friend I Broke Up With” by Lynne Ferguson, “Paper Matches” by Paullette Jiles, and “Dreams” by Langston Hughes.
The unit is organized by what I call the six characteristics of poetry: significance, comparative language, imagery, language use, line breaks, and originality. Each poem study focuses on one of these characteristics and includes analysis of characteristics previously addressed.
