Product Description
This is a complete poetry unit (10-15 days) that includes well known poems, study questions, ANSWERS, a test, a summative assignment with marking rubrics (writing a poem, analyzing a poem, reciting a poem). I use it in grade 12, but it could be used in 10-12. You do not need to use poetry units A, B, or C first (but you can). The units build on each other, but they also stand alone. Includes the following poems: "Johnie's Poem" by Alden Nowlan, "Imagine" by John Lennon, "Hope is the Thing with Feathers" by Emily Dickinson, "I Saw in Louisiana a Live Oak Growing" by Walt Whitman, "Shall I Compare You to a Summer's Day?" by William Shakespeare, "Virginia Woolf" by Emily Saliers (Indigo Girls), "somewhere i have never traveled" by ee cummings, "The Swimmer's Moment" by Margaret Avison, "I Still Haven't Found What I am Looking For" by Paul Hewson (Bono), and "The Rites of Manhood by Alden Nowlan.

The unit is organized by what I call the six characteristics of poetry: significance, comparative language, imagery, language use, line breaks, and originality. Each poem study focuses on one of these characteristics and includes analysis of characteristics previously addressed.
