Poetry Devices: Consonance (Alliteration, Near/Half Rhyme, Slant Rhyme) Common Core aligned activities to practice identifying, analyzing, and creating examples of consonance.
This IS included in Poetry Resources Bundle, Volume 2
Consonance can be a difficult sound device for students to grasp. While they may have mastered identifying alliteration, many struggle with other types of consonance such as near/half rhymes and slant rhymes. Yet, these devices are used widely in both poetry and today's modern songs.
This bundle contains two files: a 9-page student activity pack that clearly defines the three most common types of consonance (alliteration, near/half rhyme, and slant rhyme), identifies the purpose of using consonance, and practices the following skills:
-identifying consonance in and out of context (in-context activity uses song lyric examples)
-evaluating the speaker's tone and assessing the mood created by use of consonance in poems by Edgar Allan Poe and Emily Dickinson
-creating examples of consonance
*This file MAY be shared electronically with your students. Great for a 1:1 or "Bring your own device" (BYOD) school.*
The second file is a 10-page detailed teacher answer key. Includes lesson objectives, standards alignment, and answers for each practice activity.
