Poetry is a huge part of Common Core State Standards. Use the organizers, summary organizer, and rubrics when using poetry in your classroom. Standards RL.1 and RL.2 are covered in these organizers.
4 Learning Targets are included directly on the graphic organizers.
After students read a poem, you can use these organizers to help them determine the key idea of various stanzas. Once they determine the key idea, they are asked to cite textual evidence of specific details that support the key idea. Then, to take it one step further, students have to explain how the details actually support the key idea. This requires higher order thinking and ensures students go back to the text to support their answers.
4 different versions are included to meet the needs of any classroom and any student. With and without decorative borders and with and without stanza numbers listed on the organizer. The version without numbers also allows you to ask students to refer to specific stanzas without having to elaborate on each stanza. For instance, perhaps you only want students to focus on stanzas 1, 4, and 8. Write these numbers in before copying or give students the option of selecting stanzas on their own as part of student initiated learning.
Part 2 of this collection has a pre-writing organizer for students to reflect on the key ideas of the poem, author’s craft, and theme. This can be used in conjunction with Part 1 or on its own. A second page with lines is also provided for students to write their summary.
Lastly, three rubrics are included. The rubrics have a rating from 1-4 to determine if students have mastered the learning targets. All rubrics are the same, but one is labeled for students to reflect on their own work, one for you, the teacher to use to assess the student’s work, and one that is simply labeled as a rubric. The versatility of these allows you to use them with any poem at any point in the year.
Use the graphic organizer for whole group instruction, partner work, group work, literacy stations, and/or learning centers. Use these each time your students analyze a poem to help them master this important skill. The organizers and summary page are specific to poetry and can be used with any poem.
