Keeping the classroom context in mind, my unit pulls in a lot of African American authors and artists. Additionally, it provides students with a high level of autonomy to choose their interests as far as history and writers. Most of my lessons involve different activities, scaffolding, and constant teacher feedback and student/teacher conferencing throughout. My unit addresses standards, student learning preferences, and the diverse nature of my classes. Additionally, the unit is often cross-curricular to incorporate history and music. The unit can be adjusted and the literature can be changed while keeping the overall structure and use of activities. The unit was originally used with 9th grade, but could easily work with 10th graders and could be tweaked for upper grades.
