Develop a passion for poetry in your students! This poetry lesson highlights two beloved poems of James Whitcomb Riley, the Hoosier poet. Riley wrote poetry about his hometown of Greenfield, Indiana that spoke to the people around him. Times were hard and work was scarce, but Riley used dialect and description to make people feel like the poems were about them. They identified with “Little Orphant Annie” and “The Raggedy Man”. They liked Riley’s humor and his storytelling ability.

18 Multiple Choice Powerpoint game questions will keep students engaged after they have studied the two poems. The slides are timed so that students have 20 seconds to choose the answer and a five second warning will be given before the bell rings.

A illustrated slide presentation of “Little Orphant Annie” and “The Raggedy Man" will accompany printable copies of the poems that students may use to study the dialect and description. A transcription of the dialect of both poems is included.

Coloring pages will provide early finishers with an engaging activity as well as giving students a choice of pages to take home.

An Interactive notebook writing activity is included with 12 short answer questions to test the students' cloze reading ability. The templates are editable so teachers may add to the questions or change the questions to fit a specific class. A blank edible template is also included.

Materials are included for a sequencing activity using the lines of both poems. Teachers will need to print the poems on the copy machine, cut the lines apart, and place them in envelopes (envelopes not provided). A copy of the actual poems may be used for students to compare and contrast how well they did with sequencing the lines correctly. The activity could be used individually, in small groups, or in reading center activities and has worked very well for student engagement.

Directions are given for cutting, folding and glueing the interactive noteback writing pages into student notebooks.

This is an ideal addition to a course about Indiana History.
