This is a 1- to 2-week poetry unit that allows students to explore late 19th-century American poets Paul Laurence Dunbar, Edgar Lee Masters, and Edwin Arlington Robinson. Students are asked to choose just one of the authors for an in depth analysis of the author and two selected poems. Once the student has become an expert on the author and two poems, they are asked to share other specific information with partners that read the other two poets (jigsaw).
This unit is a guided venture through the Pearson Literature 11th Grade textbook that pulls much material from the book and more. This unit includes three Task Packets (one for each author) and each is three pages long. It also includes a complete step-by-step guide/walkthrough of the Jigsaw.
Suggestion: Review the Task Packets with students after the Jigsaw activity has been completed. This will provide a second opportunity to review the poets that students did not read, as well as an opportunity for them to check their work and reflect.
I hope you enjoy - feedback is always welcome. Thank you!
