This printable PowerPoint includes all the teaching strategies that I have been researching and testing in my own classroom this year. I’ve begun following the ideas of Jeff Anderson and his “mentor sentences” and have found them to be a great asset to my teaching. I also am a strong believer in “less teacher” and “more student” in having students discover and analyze poetry in group discussions and group work. I fell in love two years ago with Interactive Notebooks and the use of foldables. They will always be a part of my classroom, and I continue to work on creating unique and helpful tools for students to use. Finally, I’ve also been reading Kelly Gallagher’s research about the importance of having students have a “mentor text” and/or an “article of the week” for close reading to create and nurture better readers in the classroom. Therefore, here is a week-long study of Langston Hughes' poem, “Mother to Son” using the following classroom strategies:
