Practice your free throws and get ready to rumble! It’s a poetry tournament to end all boring poetry units. Poems are paired up by theme, type, and literary devices used in this March Madness style tournament. After each battle, students cast their vote for which poem should move on in the tournament. The voting rules start out basic, but become increasingly complex as the tournament draws to the final round. In order for a student’s vote to count, it must meet all of the requirements set forth for that battle, so students not only get plenty of practice in analyzing poetry, but also writing!
Level 2 is appropriate for high-level 7th graders and up. It includes more challenging questions and poems that both supplement and add to the Level 1 unit!
The Level 2 bundle includes the following poems, also sold individually at the links below:
Battle of Nature: “Sleeping in the Forest” by Mary Oliver vs. “Ode to enchanted light” by Pablo Neruda (focus on diction and figurative language)
Battle of Honor: “The Charge of the Light Brigade” by Alfred, Lord Tennyson vs. “The Highwayman” by Alfred Noyes (focus on narrative poetry, meter, rhyme, mood, and imagery)
Battle of Memories: “maggie and milly and molly and may” vs. “who are you, little i” by E.E. Cummings (focus on structure)
